The Story/Context: 

The Espresso Martini is easily my favorite way to bridge the gap between dinner and dessert when hosting friends. It is a sophisticated, rich cocktail that brings together high-quality caffeine and clean spirits for a perfectly balanced after-dinner drink. When made correctly, it features a thick, velvety foam on top that mimics the traditional crema of a fresh shot of espresso, adding a luxurious texture to every single sip.

Why It Works: 

Through shaking countless batches at my home bar, I have learned that getting that signature, stable froth relies completely on two non-negotiable details: the temperature of your coffee and how hard you shake. You must use freshly brewed espresso, but it needs to cool down slightly before hitting the alcohol so it does not instantly melt your ice. When you are ready, fill your shaker to the brim with large ice cubes and shake vigorously for a full 15 to 20 seconds. Shaking hard forces the proteins in the coffee to aerate, guaranteeing a beautiful, creamy head of foam when you strain it into your coupe glass.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz vodka

  • 1 oz fresh espresso (or strong brewed coffee)

  • 1/2 oz coffee liqueur

  • 3 coffee beans for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Combine vodka, espresso, and coffee liqueur in a shaker with plenty of ice.

  2. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds—this is the secret to creating the foam.

  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with the coffee beans.
